Interview with Julie Posetti- Politics, Twitter Style: Breaking news, backchannel conversations and the relationship between new and traditional media

There’s been a lot of talk this year about Twitter, the micro-blogging platform that asks users a simple question.

“What’s happening?”

It’s been described by some as simply another online fad for narcissists, but an increasing number of web-savvy bloggers and journalists are using Twitter to provide an alternative conversation to what you see and hear on radio and TV.

Earlier today I spoke to Julie Posetti (@julie_posetti) to get some insight into Twitter and how it’s changing the way the media reports the news.

24 Hours In; Short Sharp Travel

Had great fun working with Lauren Wright, Alex Hargraves and David Phelps on our final project for Convergent Journalism; a travel website titled 24 Hours In

For the project, each team member had to produce two feature  stories and one audio/visual piece. I wrote two features- one on solo travel (in two parts) and another on doing Tokyo in 24 Hours. But my favourite part of the project was producing the multimedia pieces- one a short video interview with Rob Fembock and another a slideshow of photos I took in Japan.

Playing on the radio: The Lunchbox on VOX 106.9

As part of a radio journalism subject at UOW, we had to work in groups to produce and present live a one-hour radio show (titled The Lunchbox) on a local community radio station in Wollongong, VOX FM.

While it’s a pretty nerve racking experience when you first start (on our first show I could hardly control the slider because I was shaking so much) it’s been a great learning experience, and so much fun. Each program is made up of short CAF pieces from our journalism class, along with discussion and music as well.

So far I’ve done two shows, one with the whole group (five of us) and one with just Lauren over summer. Tune in to VOX FM 106.9 in Wollongong on Feb 10 and 17 2010 for the next episodes. In the meantime, you can checkout the episodes below (may have to fast forward the start sometimes):

24 Hours In: Convergent Journalism Project

So it’s just about at the end of the uni year, and I’ve just submitted my final assessment for Convergent Journalism, an online convergence website focusing on a particular topic. I was keen to extend my writing skills to areas I hadn’t tacked before, and worked with Dave, Alex and Lauren to produce 24 Hours In– a website focusing on short, sharp travel while also tackling other travel issues, such as language skills, security and travelling solo.

The assessment really revealed to me the importance of adapting to different mediums and technologies. From WordPress to Final Cut, Soundslides to Photoshop, designing and producing content from many different sources and preparing it for online delivery taught me one valuable lesson: know your tech. As a journalist, these tools are essential for ensuring that my content gets out, and it’s vital that they remain as tools, and not the bane of my existence!

Will put more reflection up once my politics exam is done. In the meantime, check it out: 24 Hours In

Rdio Feature: Why we Relay

I’ve just finished putting together a radio feature for a broadcast journalism on this year’s Illawarra Relay for life, which is a 24 hour event raising funds for cancer research.

Why do we Relay?

Audio Story: Science Week @ UOW

A recent audio news piece for broadcast journalism on Science Week @ UOW, speaking to Professor Graeme Clark

Science Week @ UOW

60 Seconds @ UOW: Professor Chris Cook

Hi all,

Apologies for not updating for a while, but currently working on getting a lot of new content up. Here’s a video done for a recent convergent journalism assignment. Entitled ’60 Seconds @ UOW’, we were required to interview a person of interest at the university and edit video and audio into a sixty second piece for web upload and also for a series of video screens at UOW.

New site design

Welcome to moony’s ark!

This site you’re now seeing is the result of a major project in my journalism studies to design and implement a website to showcase my work. it’s definitely still a work in progress, and there’s a couple of niggling things i’m not sure about with the design. please let me know if you have any good/bad/random feedback.

i’ll be progressively uploading as much of my work as I can over the next month or two. in putting my work up, i’m again fishing for feedback, so feel free to use this blog to give me a bite.

talk soon,

moony:)
